Sentences

Sentence Quiz Sentence Resources

If we're learning about commas, why do have study sentences?

Ah ha!  Now we're getting somewhere!  In order to use commas correctly, you have to be able to identify (and write) complete sentences.

What is a sentence?

A sentence is a group of words containing a subject and verb that expresses a complete thought.

There is a three-step test to tell if a group of words is a complete sentence:
1. Does it have a verb?
2. Does it have a subject?
3. Does it express a complete thought?

If the answer to all three of these is "yes," then it is a complete sentence.
(See why we had to talk about verbs and subjects first?)
