Poetry Analysis

Title of Poem ________________________________ Author __________________________

In one sentence, explain what the title of the poem means:

Paraphrase the Poem--Put into your own words what you understand the poem to say; restate ideas that seem essential; clearly state ideas that the poem may only suggest. In some cases, the paraphrase may be longer than the poem itself.

Images in the Poem--Use direct quotations. Note the kind of image (visual, auditory, smell, taste, touch) each quotation contains.

Figurative Language--Identify similes, metaphors, personification, and symbols.

Poetic Devices--List examples of alliteration, repetition, onomatopoeia, and rhyme.

Theme--In a complete sentence, state the main idea or central thought of the poem.
