Accelerated Reader: What is cheating?

Recent events indicate that there are many “good” students who cheat. More surprising is the fact that they don’t seem to know they are doing it, or they don’t recognize it as cheating. Just for the record, here are a few things that ARE cheating:

1) Taking AR tests for other people—even if they ask you to do it and give you their password—IS CHEATING!

2) Allowing someone else to take an AR test for you IS CHEATING!

3) Taking an AR test on a book you have not read this term IS CHEATING!

4) Frantically taking as many AR tests as possible in hopes that you will score enough points to get all your AR credit IS CHEATING!

5) Taking AR tests on books you have not read since elementary school IS CHEATING!

6) Taking AR tests (other than those assigned by a teacher) on books that you have not written on your signed AR Contract IS CHEATING!

7) Taking an AR test on a book you did not read yourself IS CHEATING! (Reading the Spark Notes or having your friend tell you the story is not reading the book.)

8) Copying questions or answers from the AR program while you take a test and/or using such copied materials IS CHEATING!

If you engage in any of these practices or attempt to get AR points in any way other than by reading the book and taking the test honestly, you will lose all AR points for the term and receive a U citizenship grade.
